I decided to take my own advice last night and spent a short while in the allotment making sure that the plants in the greenhouse were watered sufficiently. They didn't require much watering as I don't think the sun came out at all yesterday. I decided that it really was time to dug up the potatoes but actually there was only a couple of plants that looked like the ones on the left. Having dug up one of the plants I decided that I could leave the majority of the plants in the ground for the time being.

The plant was well past its digging date I think. I don't know whether that's a result of the large quantities of rain we've been having. You can see from the plants to the right of the intended victim that they're okay for a little while longer. The ones to the left are actually my second earlies in amongst the bindweed and grass.

I dug up two plants in the end and this was the harvest (obviously I decided to pick garlic too - I think I'm being too eager as I think it could've done with a bit longer). The potatoes were smaller than I thought they'd be but I didn't know what to expect and was surprised there were so few.

I'm not sure what I was expecting but they were enough once they'd been diced and sautéed in a pan with the garlic and served with sausage, egg and beans.

Perfect or do they say C est bon! Anyway whatever they say, it was very satisfying to know that I'd grown them myself. These potatoes were my first earlies and they were planted around Easter time.
