I have a good pair of plot neighbours. Bernard has the plot on the right and Roy has the plot on the left. They both have many years of plot holding experience.

Both were happy that the plot between them had been taken over, as it was a bit of an eyesore between two perfectly planned, planted and tended plots.

I'm going to try and emulate their successes next year but they do keep telling me that it takes years to perfect. Not very inspiring I know and I'll be hopefully tapping into their vast knowledge during the rest of this year. They're both friendly and supportive of me and have already given me a fair amount of successful growing tips, some of which I've already put into practice. One such tip that Roy showed me was to grow parsnips in a pot rather than straight into the ground. Once the seedlings have a couple of leaves on them they can be gently teased apart and planted in the ground. This has improved my parsnip growing ability from zero germination to 100% germination. I've transplanted all of my seedlings now but they're still quite small and my first batches don't seem to have taken quite as well as my second batch. There's an example of one of my seedlings on the home page banner. I'll consider myself a success if I get a crop from these.

One other advantage I have in addition to being able to tap into my neighbour's knowledge is the fact that I have a greenhouse. Having a greenhouse gives me the ability to bring on early seedlings. Interestingly enough though, I've had some difficulty in this area in previous years and I do think that it could be down to the quality of the soil I've used. I'll be making some changes in this area for next year's seedlings.
