Like all plot holders I find watering during dry spells a bit of a chore. Because the plot is on a severe slope I have envisaged putting a water butt at the top of the plot and running drip-watering lines from the butt. It's only a pipe dream at the minute though…

I'm not sure that I can stretch to the amount of money needed to fund the project but I have been pricing components on e-bay and have found that I could potentially do this fairly cheaply though I'd have to buy the conventional plumbing from B&Q or Wickes.

The allotment is supplied with water, from the mains, at the top of a number of plots. The taps are fitted with non-return valves so that no dirty water gets back into the main.

Plot holders are not allowed to use water from the river and this is written into the contract. There are rumours, however, of people using water from the river to water their plots…
